Pregnant Queens And Kitting
A pregnant kitty will begin nesting and denning behavior anywhere from a few weeks after pregnancy to a couple weeks before kitting. They will try and find the quietest place, the most secluded place, and build a nest of sorts. (In Clans, this would be the driest, warmest part of the nursery.) They usually don't make a big deal over it.
Pregnant cats know they're pregnant. And they will not be caught by surprise when they begin kitting. They will know. They wouldn't be, unless they're incredibly unintelligent or stubborn, or for some reason, walking out in the forest, or in a lake, or anywhere else but their nest, or the warmest, safest, most secluded den they could find on short notice.
When kitting, cats do NOT scream, howl, or cry out in pain. It is not long. It is not dramatic. They do not make noise. (In Clans, they may ask for a medicine cat.) They usually just want privacy. Usually, the only noise you'll hear, the first noises, will be the very loud cries of the newborn kits. Newborn kits are very vocal, especially if they aren't fed immediately.
So, dramatics are useless, uncalled for, and unrealistic.
Kit Growth
Newborn (Newborn) - When kits are newborns they cannot see or hear. They do not move around much other than to pile with their siblings or feed or be groomed by their mothers. They navigate by scent and sometimes warmth, but never walk, they crawl.
Week Old (One Fourth Moon Old) - Kits will sometimes begin to open their eyes and begin to hear some at this stage. Give or take a little. What they see is blurry and what they hear is most likely not crystal clear. They will begin to crawl more, but it is unlikely they'll play much at this stage, as they are still very young and easily exhausted. They still depend fully on mother for food.
Two Weeks Old (Half A Moon Old)- By this stage the kit will begin to see and hear more clearly, though it could still be somewhat blurry. They will begin to stumble around in an attempt to walk, and may play some with their siblings. They still tire easily. They may begin to talk in simple, fragmented words. They still depend fully on mother for food.
Three Weeks Old (Three Fourths Moon Old) - The kit at this stage will begin to gain some balance, and will probably be able to walk, though still wobbly. They may even try to run. They will probably play fight in earnest now, and may begin to explore with confidence. They will still depend on mother for food. They may talk in some phrases, though not full sentences. Their words probably will not be clear, as some sounds would probably be hard to pronounce.
Four Weeks Old (One Moon Old) - At this stage kits will be walking and probably running easily. They will probably play and even try to play with other kits. They may begin to explore and ask questions. Their speaking abilities will be more developed, and will probably begin to speak well. They will probably still depend on their mother for food, though.
Five Weeks Old (One Moon Old And One Fourth) - At this stage kits will be walking, running, playing, and basically being kits. They will likely ask questions and such and will probably express curiosity, but it is all on personality. They will probably begin to sample fresh-kill from their mothers, though they still will depend partially on her for food. They will begin to form sentences when they speak, and their vocabulary may expand.
Six Through Eight Weeks Old (One And A Half Moons Old Through Two Moons Old) - The kits at this stage will begin to get a better feel for the world. They will be playing with other kits (though once again, it depends on personality), running, walking, and doing other things like kits. They will begin being weaned onto fresh-kill by their mothers, and probably by the end of this period, will be eating primarily fresh-kill. They will probably be able to speak well, though their vocabulary wouldn't be fully expanded.
Nine Weeks Old To Apprenticeship (Two And One Fourth Moon Old Through Six Moons Old) - The kit will be able to run, walk, play, and basically be a full fledged kit! They will now probably be on fresh-kill unless they have an overindulgent mother. They will speak normally, and through this time probably expand their vocabulary and knowledge of the Clan. They may grow restless and try to get out of the nursery as they grow older.
